HERZOG BARTOSZ TZYRNOWSKI,

Your letter reached me not as the reasoned address of a noble, but as a document steeped in bile, lies, and treasonous ambition. In place of diplomacy, you offer insults. In place of honour, threats. You invoke tradition, yet abandon the very laws and customs that bind our Empire together. You call me a coward—and yet it is you who wages war with words behind the walls of your keep, rather than meet a man as his equal.

You accuse me of failing in my duties, and yet I have done nothing but serve. The military you mock is being reforged—made stronger, not softer. Reform is not weakness; it is the lifeblood of an Empire that must endure. If this offends your nostalgia for your father’s sword, then I suggest you polish it and remember that it lies buried with him. You speak of Ser Damien as if he were a hound that has been misplaced. I have been tasked—by the Crown Prince, on behalf of the Kaiser himself—with finding him. The Council is all aware of such. His absence is not negligence, but mystery. One that you, for all your noise, have done nothing to solve. You cite the Griffin of Bergwald. Yes, the Empire cannot yet spare the soldiers to fell it. I will not waste lives to impress you. If you so yearn for glory, take up your own arms and face the beast yourself.

You slander me again with old gossip about Her Highness, the Crown-Princess Anna-Carina. I say this once more: both the Temple and the Crown have cleared me of wrongdoing. To dispute their judgement is to defy the Throne and the will of Alder. Your words are not righteous—they are blasphemous.

And now you lie outright. Your stepson, Quill, insulted me before others. When offered a dignified solution—an apology—he refused and demanded a duel. Which I was not able to accept before your wife intervened with the illegal use of her magic. I travelled to seek peace and yet it seems you seek to make it war. You threaten my life. You threaten my lands. You openly speak of burning Ceril’s Keep to the ground and replacing me with another. This is not politics. This is sedition. And now you attempt to lure my kin, to use my brother Joseph and my fiance Daphne as pieces in your game. They are not yours to summon, and they will not heed the call of a man who wraps poison in silk and calls it concern. You speak treason with each breath—and the Empire hears you.

Know this: the Kaiser himself, sensing the twilight of his life, has invoked his will to preserve the Empire. His words are as follows:

“Order has been challenged by Chaos once more as Reichsmarshall Richard of House Vianden has been threatened and attacked by rival Houses on the road. However, in his fulfilling role as the enforcer of Imperial Law and order, he is to speak with the Kaiser's voice and act as his sword. And thus, the threats made against Lord Vianden are a threat made against the Empire as a whole.”

In accordance with this decree, I have been granted emergency powers by the Imperial Crown to ensure peace is restored and the thoughts of rebellion extinguished. I am authorised:
  1. To take any limb raised in aggression against the Crown.
  2. To cut any tongue that speaks violence and rebellion.
  3. To take the eyes of witnesses who stood idle in the face of treachery.
These powers stand until year’s end, and may be expanded should the threat persist. It would be unfortunate if these powers will have to be used.

So I tell you now, Herzog: temper your fury or be consumed by it. Be wise and retract your words. Withdraw your threats. Or you will not only find yourself in defiance of me—you will stand condemned by the Crown, the Council, and Alder Himself. I will not be threatened. I will not be baited. I will not burn.

Loyalty Binds Me
