The life of a squire begins with an inexperienced young man, wishing to be more than he currently is. Be they high- or lowborn, they wish to test their mettle and prove their merit. A long and hard-fought journey led them from battles against fierce beasts to a battle with their very own mind and soul. Their years of training would inevitably prepare them for a life in service of the Order, their Kaiser, and their Fatherland.

Even the highest of highborn young men find their way to the gates of Rosenberg, among them Prinz Hugo von Lichtenfelts, son of the late Kaiser Philipp II. Sent to learn the ways of discipline, grace and decorum by his uncle, the reigning Kaiser Diederick-Göbel. His tale was personally overseen by Ser Markvart von Herdorf over the course of three years, having entered a boy and being released back into the world as a man of the Golden Rose. The experience has seen him change positively, into a charismatic leader of men, determined to serve Kaiser and country.

The trial is meant to prepare one for any battle, against foes large and small, though this trial only tests one against the most ferocious. On his lonesome, Squire Hugo was sent to retrieve a trophy from the wilderness. He returned gloriously, having slain one of the larger black bears roaming the Empire. He dispatched of the beast swiftly and skinned it, taking its pelt and head home as proof of his victory.

During the Trial of Mind, squires are evaluated on their worldly and godly knowledge, as well as their understanding of the duties and expectations that come with the title of Ritter of the Golden Rose. Squire Hugo took the test after having spent the night training with the sword, believing his preparations to have been sufficient. He passed with a score of 60%, most of the correct answers coming from the ‘hypotheticals’ category of the exam, showing off his theoretical judgment.

Squire Hugo spent the duration of this trial at the Cult of Mortius’ monastery, being guided by Black Abbot Gottfried von Wolfhard and Brother Raymond van der Draeck. He joined them in their prayers and learned about the workings of the Cult. He was deemed to be of a strong mind and even stronger spirit, as the Black Abbot granted him a rosary as a token of his belief. He completed his vigil through the night without issue.
